- One tin, no hardener. What you don't use keeps for next year.
- Ratings run from 140°C to 300°C inside the same product range. Check the tin, not the category.
- It is for blocks, heads and covers. It will burn off a manifold.
- Depending on the brand, you can start the engine after a day or after nearly a week.
What it is
Engine enamel is a one-pack paint. There is no activator to mix and no pot life to beat, so the tin you opened last winter is still good. That is why most privately owned engines are painted with it and not with 2K.
The name describes a job, and the makers get there by different routes. Hycote's data sheet says its engine enamels are modified silicone and alkyd resins with temperature-stable pigments. VHT calls its version a blend of urethane and ceramic resins. POR-15 sells a brushable, self-levelling enamel and doesn't say what the resin is.
The job is the same for all of them. The paint has to stay put at block temperature, shrug off petrol, oil and grease, and survive the degreaser it will meet at the next rebuild. Hycote claims petrol, oil and grease resistance in writing.
How hot it can go
Hycote publishes three maximum service temperatures on a single data sheet. Aluminium is 300°C. Matt Black is 300°C. Gloss Black is 140°C. Same range, same shelf, and the gloss manages less than half the heat.
VHT rates its Engine Enamel at 550°F, which is 288°C, and calls that figure intermittent. An intermittent rating is a peak the film survives. It is not a temperature the paint will sit at all day.
POR-15 says its Engine Enamel holds its colour up to 300°F and sends anything hotter to a different product. Watch the units. POR-15's 300 is Fahrenheit, about 149°C. Hycote's 300 is Celsius. The same three digits, a hundred and fifty degrees apart.
So "engine enamel" covers everything from 140°C to 300°C, and the colour you want may not carry the rating you need.
None of these is a manifold coating and none of the makers says it is. Exhaust parts need a very high temperature coating, which is a different product with a different cure.
Aerosol, brush or gun
Hycote is aerosol only, in 400 ml cans, with a 500 ml option in gloss black. The sheet asks you to shake the can for at least two minutes, spray lightly from 20 to 25 cm, and build up two coats or more with 20 to 30 minutes between them. It also wants the work done between 15°C and 25°C. In an unheated British garage that rules out most of November to March.
VHT sells the same way, as the middle can of a three-can system of primer, colour and clear.
POR-15 is the brush-on choice. It levels itself as it dries, which is what hides the brush marks. You can also thin it by up to 5% with POR-15's own reducer and put it through an HVLP gun. It is the only one of the three with a coverage figure: a pint usually does a whole engine.
That figure is the practical case for a tin. Aerosol makers publish no coverage at all, so the first time you paint a block from cans, buy one more than you think you need.
When you can start the engine
The makers disagree by days.
VHT says 30 minutes to touch, an hour to handle and 24 hours to dry fully. To cure it, bake the part at 93°C for 20 minutes or let the running engine do the work. That is the convenient one. Drive the car and the paint finishes itself.
Hycote is stricter. You can overcoat with the same paint after 24 hours, but the sheet says full solvent resistance only arrives after a heat cure at 220°C for 90 minutes. That applies to the two 300°C colours, Aluminium and Matt Black. A domestic oven reaches 220°C, so a rocker cover or a bracket can have the full cure. A block can't, and on the car it will never see 220°C, so treat a Hycote-painted block as slightly softer than the sheet's best case and keep brake cleaner off it.
POR-15 is slowest. Touch dry takes two to six hours, and then it wants four to six days before the engine runs.
Where people go wrong
The usual mistake is buying by category. Two colours in the same Hycote range differ by 160°C.
Next comes priming when the maker says not to. Hycote's sheet is blunt: the enamels are self-priming and no primer is to be used. VHT sells a primer as part of its system. POR-15 wants its Rust Preventive Coating on bare or rusted metal first. The right answer is the one printed on your own tin. There is more on this under primers.
Preparation is where the job is won. Hycote asks for a detergent or solvent clean, a rinse, a dry, a wire brush or wet-and-dry on any rust, and then a final wipe with brake cleaner, white spirit or thinners. POR-15 asks for its degreaser, then Metal Prep kept wet on rust for 10 to 20 minutes, then 320 grit over anything already painted. The preparation guide goes through it step by step.
Last, don't assume you can lacquer over it. Hycote lists "surfaces needing overcoating with a different coating" among the places not to use its enamel. VHT sells a clear, but only as part of its own system. See clear coats.
